Human beings have an extraordinary
talent in complicating their own lives. However, the fact that people
sometimes suffer from painful, contorted and persistent disorders
does not mean that they can only be cured by equally painful, contorted
and long-lasting therapies.
The experiences of distinguished therapists and researchers have demonstrated
that it is possible to quickly help people stop their own suffering,
through psychological therapies based on suggestive, well-focused
strategic interventions.
In this book, one of the most famous researchers of the Palo Altos
school new generation, describes the most advanced applications of
strategic problem solving to human problems.
He presents ideas and suggestions drown from his ten-years experience
on treating over three thousand cases (most of them solved within
few weeks) regarding a great variety of psychopathology. Using anecdotes,
metaphors, discussions, and narrations of seemingly "magical"
therapies, Giorgio Nardone guides the reader in a pleasant and useful
voyage of discovery of the art of solving complicated human problems
by seemingly simple solutions.
From " Prologue"
One of the worst convictions, in
its effects, of the last hundred years is the fact that, if a
person has had a serious and persistent psychological pathology
for long time, his/her therapy will have to be so hard and long.
Such a pseudo-scientific belief held out for decades, either to
opposite evidence of facts, or to the evolution of the science
and still it persists in such places, where maybe the defense
of orthodoxy is more important than the real cure of human pains;
in these cases, as according to Hegel, if the facts do not
agree with theory, it is the worst for the facts.
Therefore, during the last 30 years, a lot of scholars and authors
have shown and let people know how it is possible to solve efficiently
and quickly the most of psychological and behavioral pathologies,
by getting back ancient knowledge and using the contributions
of the most update scientific researches.
As Occam says: "What people can do with a little uselessly
it is done with a lot."
On this way, the ideas and suggestions derive from the experience
of more than 3,000 cases treated in a decade, the most of them
being solved within few weeks. In other words, the purpose is
to plunge the reader in the wonderful "art" that
is solving complex problems by apparently simple solutions.
